"Likinsky Avtobus" OOO: History and the Present Day The Plant history goes back as far as 1933 when the decision on "LOZOD" wood chemical pilot plant construction was passed. In 1935 the plant produced insulating plates, lignoston studs, chipboards and chipboard products. In 1945, the plant was renamed into Likinsky Machine-Building Plant (LiMZ) and manufactured electric saws, sleeper saw benches, locomotive tractors, hoists, and mobile power stations. In 1946 the total number of personnel came to more than 1,100 employees. In 1959 the plant started assembling ZiL 158 passenger buses, and the name of the plant changed to Likinsky Bus Plant (LiAZ). Annual production output came to 213 buses in 1959, 5,419 busers in 1963, and 7,045 buses in 1969. At the same time development and testing of a new improved LiAZ-677 big size bus was carried out. The pilot batch was manufactured in 1967. For the next 25 years over 200,000 LiAZ - 677 buses, including their city, arctic, tour, suburban, compressed gas, and mobile TV-reporting versions were manufactured. In autumn 1972 at International Leipzig Trade Show LiAZ - 677 bus was awarded golden medal and 1st Diploma. In 1975 the annual output production reached the targeted 10,000 busses. In 1976 the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded the Plant with a Labor Red Banner. In 1982 development of technical revamping and upgrading project with the focus on manufacturing LiAZ - 5256 buses was launched at the Plant. In 1985 this reengineering project was launched. At the same time small batch production of the new bus make was arranged in the low volume production workshop. Commercial production of LiAZ - 5256 big-size city bus has been started since 1990. The period of 1991 - 1995 was notorious for deteriorated production figures of the Plant due to economic crisis. In 1996 the Plant suspended production, and the matter of bankruptcy was initiated. External management was appointed in 1997, and then receivership took place. Undertaken procedures let retain and save the territory and the assets of the plant, as well as its line of activity, so that, today "Liknsky Avotbus" OOO is a modern facility, which employs advanced mass-production techniques that ensure manufacture of big-size buses under current European standards. The Plant's area is 630,000 m2; its production facilities cover 172,000 m2. The Plant employs over 3,000 pieces of domestic and exported equipment and machinery by "Jeico" (Italy), "Kaltenbach" (Austria), "Nakata" (Japan), "Schlatter" (Switzerland), "Esab" (Sweden), "Halbron", "Trumatic", and Trumbent" (Germany) manufacturers, and many others. In 2000 new city bus makes were developed. These makes were designed with consideration of the customer requirements. Manufacture of extra big articulated LiAZ - 6212 city bus make and LiAZ - 5256 R suburban bus make was, also, started in 2000. Preparations for manufacturing low floor city buses have been carried out, since recently.
