The Volvo B10R is a rear-engined city bus chassis.
A new model was added to the range of Volvo bus chassis in 1978, when production of the B10R rear-underfloor-engined city and urban bus commenced at the company's new Borås plant, to the east of Gothenburg. Described as a logical development from the B59 rear-underfloor-engined model, the B10R incorporates many of the advanced features of the earlier model, and is again powered by the THD 100 D 6-cyl. turbocharged horizontal diesel, with a maximum output of 218 bhp; an economy version rated at 178 bhp is also produced.
Once again a low floor has been provided, with a floor height of only 540mm immediately in front of the rear axle when low profile tyres are fitted. The chassis is designed essentially for fully-integral bodywork, in similar fashion to the B59, with the added provision for a third doorway behind the rear axle, and incorporates the very tight steering lock featured on earlier Volvo models.
New heavy-duty sub-frames are employed on both axles, together with redesigned air springs with automatic level control to provide constant floor height irrespective of passenger loading. Larger brakes are fitted than on most city bus chassis, with a total net brake lining area of 6,865sq cm, and the redesigned brake drum flanges introduced on the B59 to dissipate heat and reduce brake squeal are again employed.
A choice of three automatic transmissions is available as standard, with the addition of two semi-automatic options. A smaller automatic gearbox can be employed with the derated version of the THD 100D engine.
The engine compartment is fully enclosed to reduce noise, and incorporates two Halon-gas fire extinguishing systems operated by heat sensors. The first is manually operated by the driver, in response to a warning light link to the dashboard, white the second operates automatically should the temperature continue to rise. (kilde: Wikipedia)
